DC weather history for September 22

An unusually early chill in 1904 brought the first September temperatures in the 30s on record, while in 1994 a nor’easter delivered heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal damage.

On this day in 1904, the temperature fell to a calendar-day record low 39 degrees. It was the earliest instance on record of temperatures dipping into the 30s during the fall. The afternoon temperature only reached 57, marking a record cold high. The next morning, the mercury tumbled to 36 — the lowest temperature for any September day.

And on this day in 1994, a calendar-day record 1.53 inches of rain fell from a nor’easter. Up to 6 inches were reported in Calvert County, Maryland. Winds gusting over 50 mph caused damage in coastal Maryland. At the Sunfest end of summer event in Ocean City, high winds ripped apart tents and destroyed concession booths. The high winds also fanned multiple fires that destroyed businesses.
