A brutal cold wave in 1880 sent temperatures plunging below zero, with even colder readings and frigid daytime highs following immediately after.

On this day in 1880, the temperature plunged to minus-7, a calendar-day record low. The temperature fell even further the next day, bottoming out at minus-13, a record low for the month. The daytime highs were also bitterly cold. It only reach 9 degrees on Dec. 30 and 13 on Dec. 31.
