DC weather history for December 28

A 1993 snowstorm dropped a couple inches of powder but caused outsized disruption, arriving early, lingering, and contributing to a bitterly cold holiday stretch.

On this day in 1993, 2 inches of powdery snow fell. The high was just 27 and the low 22. 

“Like a rude guest at a holiday party, the snowstorm that blanketed Washington yesterday arrived early and stayed longer than expected, forcing government and businesses to close and altering plans for thousands of area residents,” the front page of The Washington Post reported the next day. Two deaths were attributed to the snow and cold.

The last week of 1993 was very wintry. Highs didn’t top freezing on five of seven days and the high of 37 on Christmas was the least cold day of the stretch.
