DC weather history for September 21

Heavy rain from a 1979 coastal storm set a daily record and contributed to one of the wetter Septembers on record.

On this day in 1979, a coastal storm produced a calendar-day record 2.18 inches of rain. There were spotty reports of flooding in Maryland and Virginia. Over a half of foot of rain fell that month, which ranked among the top 25 wettest on record. Earlier in the month, the remnants of Hurricane David dropped 3.65 inches on Sept. 5.
