DC weather history for September 20

Rain from the approach of the 1938 hurricane set a daily record locally, a prelude to the catastrophic impacts the storm would unleash farther north in New England.

On this day in 1938, a calendar-day record 1.43 inches of rain fell as the infamous 1938 hurricane, known as the Long Island Express or Great New England Hurricane, barreled toward the East Coast. A surge of rain in the Mid-Atlantic, indirectly associated with the hurricane, presaged its arrival. Parts of the Delmarva Peninsula received over 8 inches but impacts in the Mid-Atlantic were minor compared with the catastrophe that unfolded in New England.
