DC weather history for September 19

A remarkable late-season heat wave in 1895 began with a 96-degree day and went on to set records for five straight days—an intensity rarely seen so late in September.

On this day in 1895, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 96 degrees. It was the first of five straight days to set records; it reached 94, 96, 98 and 98 between Sept. 20 and 23. This marked the most intense heat wave so late in the season ever observed in D.C.
