DC weather history for October 31

Remnants of a Caribbean hurricane in 1899 brought soaking rains and strong winds to the region as it tracked up the East Coast on a path similar to Hurricane Hazel.

On this day in 1899, D.C. received 1.22 inches of rain as the remnants of a Caribbean hurricane passed through the area. Another 0.88 inches would fall on Nov. 1.

The storm made landfall near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and tracked through North Carolina, Virginia and southeast Pennsylvania before pushing into New England and the Canadian Maritimes. It followed a similar path to Hurricane Hazel in 1954. A wind gust of 84 mph was clocked at Cape Henry, Virginia, and an ocean surge of about 9 feet occurred in Norfolk.
