DC weather history for November 1

Severe thunderstorms in 1994 brought a rare late-season tornado outbreak, damaging over 100 homes and capping a stretch of unusually warm, humid weather.

On this day in 1994, severe thunderstorms swept across Northern Virginia, D.C. and Maryland. Two tornadoes touched down around Baltimore, shearing off roofs and cutting off power to thousands. The Baltimore Sun reported the twisters damaged more than 100 homes and caused at least $3 million in damage.

Storms damaged property from Montgomery County to Carroll County in Maryland, according to The Washington Post, and unleashed hail in Northern Virginia and D.C.

The storms formed along a cold front. “The arriving cool air met the warm and humid temperatures of what one forecaster called ‘the soupiest Halloween you could get’ to produce a summer-like thunderstorm,” The Post reported.

Temperatures reached the 70s on both Halloween and Nov. 1 before the cold front passed.
