DC weather history for March 29

A historic late-season blizzard in 1942 dumped record snowfall, disrupting travel and utilities across the region.

On this date in 1942, a March record 11.5 inches of snow fell. Known as the “Palm Sunday storm,” it is the biggest so late in the season in modern records.

“It was the dreariest Palm Sunday within the memory of Washington residents,” the front page of The Washington Post said. The Post reported up to 18 inches of snow fell and that the storm wrecked power lines, uprooted trees and disrupted traffic.
