DC weather history for March 28

A burst of late-month warmth in 1945 brought record highs and an extended stretch of 80-degree days, capping one of the warmest Marches on record.

On this date in 1945, the temperature soared to a record high of 85 degrees. It marked the second day of a five-day streak in the 80s to close the month. It soared to 89 on March 29, the warmest of the bunch. That month had nine days in the 80s and marked the second-warmest March on record, trailing only 2012.

“With lamblike countenance, March yesterday prepared to make a docile exit as it marked up its fifth record-breaking warm day,” The Washington Post front page reported on March 29.
