On this date in 1988, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 98 degrees. It marked the second straight day of record heat, after it was 101 on June 22.

It was on this date that NASA climate scientist James Hansen, testifying before Congress, famously said “The greenhouse effect has been detected and it is changing our climate now,” The Washington Post reported.
