DC weather history for June 24

Severe storms and extreme heat stand out, from a destructive 1996 tornado outbreak to triple-digit temperatures in 2010.

On this date in 1996, a significant outbreak of severe thunderstorms affected the D.C. area. “A violent thunderstorm ripped across the Washington area during yesterday's evening rush hour, spawning a destructive tornado, toppling trees, tearing at roofs and knocking out electricity to more than a quarter of a million homes,” The Washington Post reported on its front page. A tornado with winds of about 150 mph touched down in Centreville, Virginia, The Post wrote.

And on this date in 2010, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 100. It was one of four days which reached the triple digits that summer, which was the hottest on record.
