DC weather history for June 11

An unseasonable chill in 1972 brought near-record cold and even frost to parts of the region in mid-June.

On this date in 1972, unusually chilly weather spread over much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Baltimore-Washington International Marshall and Washington Dulles International airports recorded lows of 40 degrees. Frost was observed in Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park, where it dipped to 31 degrees.

In D.C., the low was 47 degrees — two degrees above the record set in 1913 when it was 45 (the third day in a row with record lows in the mid-40s that year). The high that day was just 70 degrees.
