DC weather history for June 12

Remnants of Hurricane Abby in 1968 delivered soaking rains, setting a daily record as the storm’s long journey came to an end.

On this date in 1968, the remnants of Hurricane Abby brought heavy rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic. D.C. received 2.23 inches, a calendar-day record.

D.C.’s encounter with Abby came near the end of its long path. After briefly reaching hurricane strength in the southeast Gulf of Mexico on June 3, it made landfall as a strong tropical storm on Florida’s west coast June 4. It crossed the state before briefly moving offshore and then making a second landfall near Jacksonville, Florida, on June 6. Next it drifted through Georgia and the Carolinas as a depression before dissipating off the Delmarva Peninsula on June 13.
