DC weather history for July 6

Oppressive heat in 1999 sent temperatures to 103 degrees with record-warm nights, straining power systems and proving deadly during one of the region’s most intense heat waves.

On this date in 1999, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 103 degrees. The previous day hit a record of 102. Nighttime lows of 81 and 83 degrees on the two days also set records for warmth.

“Utility companies across the mid-Atlantic region strained to prevent a broad power failure yesterday as consumption reached record highs amid suffocating heat that killed at least two District residents,” The Washington Post reported that July 6.
