DC weather history for July 7

Record heat in 2012. Intense storms in 2020, bringing flooding rains and widespread impacts.

On this date in 2012, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record of 105 degrees. It was a mere one degree shy of the highest temperature ever observed in D.C. and it came awfully close. “The mercury touched 106 for one minute before slipping back to 105, failing to sustain the three-minute span required to establish a record,” The Washington Post reported.

And on this date in 2020, a calendar-day record 2.04 inches of rain fell. “Multiple rounds of intense, boisterous thunderstorms roared through the Washington region Monday evening and persisted deep into the night,” Jeff Halverson and I reported. “The National Weather Service received nearly 20 reports of flooding across the region and about 30 reports of damaging winds.” The storms left thousands without power, flooded two Metro stations and scattered downed trees on roadways.
