DC weather history for July 5

A torrential 1905 cloudburst dumped record rainfall in a short span, flooding streets and disrupting travel across the city.

On this date in 1905, D.C. received a calendar-day record 3.68 inches of rain. Of that amount, 2.77 inches fell in just one hour and 3.33 inches in two hours. “The worst rainstorm the city has experienced in many years played havoc with the theaters, drove scores of persons seeking a cool breeze into their homes, and for an hour, to the rumble of thunder and flash of lightning, the rain fell in torrents,” The Washington Times reported. “The storm tied up street railways for more than an hour, and in the sections of the city where excavations are being made for new buildings it swept the dirt almost into the houses and piled up sometimes a foot high.”
