DC weather history for February 2

A 1996 storm added a record 5.3 inches in a day, continuing an exceptionally snowy winter that featured multiple significant events.

On this day in 1996, a calendar-record 5.3 inches of snow fell in the District. An additional 3.1 inches came down on Feb. 3 to push the storm total to 8.4 inches.

The snowstorm came on the heels of an exceptionally snowy January, in which 23.8 inches accumulated, including 17.8 inches during an early-month blizzard.

February of that year would end up with 15.2 inches after a surprise storm of 6.8 inches on Feb. 16.
