DC weather history for February 3

A strong 1886 storm dropped over 9 inches in a day and more than a foot overall, followed by a surge of frigid air that sent temperatures plunging below zero.

On this day in 1886, a calendar-day record 9.2 inches of snow fell. An additional 3.2 inches came down the next day, producing a storm total of 12.4 inches, ranking as the District’s 15th biggest snowstorm on record. Frigid air followed the storm. Highs reached only the mid-teens on Feb. 4 and 5, and the low fell to a record of minus-2 on the 5th.
