DC weather history for September 3

A powerful 1821 hurricane brought widespread coastal devastation, while in 1909 an early-season chill set record lows during a prolonged stretch of cool weather.

On this day in 1821, a great storm known as the Norfolk Long Island Hurricane, ripped up the Mid-Atlantic coast. The storm caused “general devastation” in Norfolk and unleashed wind gusts over 100 mph at the Maryland and Delaware beaches. It then brought a devastating ocean surge to New York City.

And on this date in 1909, the temperature fell to a calendar-day record low of 48 degrees. It was part of a 17-day stretch, beginning in late August, with below normal temperatures. Three days later, the low dipped to 47 degrees, another record. That September averaged 6 degrees below normal and was the 17th coolest on record.
