Blistering late-season heat in 1980 sent temperatures to 101 degrees, part of a record-setting stretch of 90-degree days that extended deep into September.

On this date in 1980, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record 101 degrees. The hot day was part of a 14-day streak with highs of 90 or higher that ended on Sept. 6, the longest such stretch so late in a year on record. That month featured 14 90-degree days and ranked as the third hottest September on record. And that year racked up 67 90-degree days, tied with 2010 for the most on record.
