DC weather history for September 28

Unseasonable chill in 1984 brought the lowest September high on record, while in 2004 the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne delivered record rainfall and widespread flooding.

On this day in 1984, the high in D.C. was only 52 degrees — the lowest ever observed during the month.

And on this day in 2004, the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne — which made landfall in Florida — produced a calendar-day record 2.46 inches of rain. The storm “punched through the region,” The Washington Post wrote, “wringing out a soaking rain that caused widespread flooding and road closures.” The highest rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches fell west and southwest of the Beltway. Loudoun County was particularly hard hit.
