Heavy rain from Hurricane Gloria in 1985 set a daily record, though the storm ultimately dealt the region a lighter blow than initially feared.

On this date in 1985, a calendar-day record 3.17 inches of rain fell as Hurricane Gloria roared up the East Coast. The storm, which passed the Mid-Atlantic farther offshore than expected, was less severe than feared in the D.C. area and even areas closer to the coast. “Hurricane Gloria struck no more than a glancing blow to the East Coast yesterday, tearing down power lines and crushing fishing piers but leaving far less damage than weather experts feared from a storm that started as one of the most dangerous to move up the Atlantic in the last 50 years,” The Washington Post wrote on its front page the next day.
