DC weather history for September 14

A torrential 1966 downpour set a rainfall record, triggering flash flooding and abruptly ending a drought across the region.

On this date in 1966, a calendar-day record 4.07 inches of rain fell. The rainfall “flash-flooded the Washington area … snarling traffic with numerous washouts, filling basements, knocking out power lines — and washing away the water shortage threat,” the front page of The Washington Post read. Before the deluge, the region was experiencing drought. Heavy rain fell over a large area extending from North Carolina to Pennsylvania, The Post reported.
