The worst of the storm’s wind stayed to the east of D.C. Cape Henry in southeast Virginia clocked sustained winds up to 134 mph and gusts up to 150 mph. New York City observed sustained winds of 81 mph and gusts up to 99 mph. The storm was blamed for 390 deaths and over $100 million in damage.
