DC weather history for September 13

Rain from the powerful 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane set a daily record locally, while the storm caused catastrophic winds and damage farther up the East Coast.

On this date in 1944, a calendar-day record 2.51 inches of rain fell as the Great Atlantic Hurricane passed to the east. The powerhouse storm tracked from coastal North Carolina to Newfoundland. The worst of the storm’s wind stayed to the east of D.C. Cape Henry in southeast Virginia clocked sustained winds up to 134 mph and gusts up to 150 mph. New York City observed sustained winds of 81 mph and gusts up to 99 mph. The storm was blamed for 390 deaths and over $100 million in damage.
