DC weather history for October 6

A remarkable October 1941 heat wave brought three straight record highs, including a 93-degree day during one of the hottest stretches ever observed so late in the season.

On this day in 1941, the temperature soared to a calendar-day record 93 degrees. It was the second of three straight record-hot days. It was 96 on Oct. 5 and 95 on Oct. 7.

“The sun blazed down mercilessly on Washington and vicinity yesterday, sending the mercury soaring to a high of 96 degrees, the hottest October day recorded here,” The Washington Post wrote on its front page on Oct. 6. “The weather man offers little relief for today.”
