DC weather history for October 5

Early flakes in the 1800s marked some of the region’s first hints of winter, while in 1995 the remnants of Hurricane Opal spawned multiple tornadoes that damaged dozens of homes across the area.

On this day in 1836, snow covered roofs in Virginia’s Loudoun County for more than an hour, while the temperature on Capitol Hill in D.C. dipped to 38, according to glenallenweather.com.

And on this day in 1892, a trace of snow was observed in D.C., the earliest instance on record.

And on this date in 1995, the remnants of Hurricane Opal swept through the region, spawning tornadoes that caused damage in Charles, Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties. The twisters “destroyed 15 houses and damaged 82 others in the Camp Springs-Temple Hills area of Prince George's County and damaged 18 houses in Severn and Odenton in Anne Arundel County,” The Washington Post reported. The National Weather Service confirmed at least five tornadoes during the event.
