Late-season heat peaked in 1919 with an extraordinary 87-degree day, part of a widespread East Coast warm spell that shattered records.

On this day in 1919, the temperature soared to 87 degrees, the highest on record so late in the year. Abnormally warm weather affected much of the eastern United States, with record highs in Savannah, Georgia (86); Atlanta (84); Richmond (87); New York (83) and Boston (81).
