DC weather history for October 22

Heavy rain in 1929 tied a daily record and caused flooding in surrounding areas, with roads in Northern Virginia submerged under several inches of water.

On this day in 1929, 1.54 inches of rain drenched D.C., tied with 1937 for highest amount on record for the date. Heavier rain fell in Northern Virginia, flooding roads, according to the front page of The Washington Post. More than four inches fell in Culpeper. “Reports received here indicate that water crossed the highways on all Virginia routes to Washington,” The Post wrote.
