An unseasonably cold stretch in 1972 brought a record low of 31 degrees, with nearby snow and several days of well-below-normal temperatures.

On this day in 1972, the temperature plunged to a calendar-day record of 31 degrees. It came the day after a low of 34, a record-cold high of 45 and a trace of snow; up to 3 inches fell in northern and western Maryland. And the next day, the low dipped to 32 degrees. That October averaged nearly 5 degrees colder than normal.
