A deadly 1926 tornado tore through La Plata, Maryland, killing 17 people and destroying an elementary school in one of the region’s most tragic severe weather events.

On this day in 1926, a violent tornado swept through La Plata, Maryland. The twister, which was on the ground for 18 miles, killed 17 people. The tornado hit an elementary school in La Plata, reportedly lifting it off the ground; 13 students died. Pieces of the schoolhouse were found as far away as Upper Marlboro and Bowie.

Another deadly tornado hit La Plata on April 28, 2002.
