On this day in 1977, the low temperature was only 66 degrees, the warmest minimum for the calendar day on record. It was the third straight record warm night. The previous lows on Nov. 3 and 4 of 64 and 67 were also calendar-day records. The afternoons were warm, too, but they did not set records. Highs each day between Nov. 2 and 5 reached at least 70.
And on this day in 1991, the low dipped to a chilly 27 degrees in D.C. It was not a record, though, as it had fallen to 20 on this day in 1879. The chill at Washington Dulles International Airport, where the temperature fell to 19, was record-setting. It would get even colder the next night, plummeting to a record low of 16 on Nov. 6.
And on this day in 2003, a calendar-day record high of 81 degrees was followed by severe thunderstorms. The storms spawned a pair of weak tornadoes that swept from Northern Virginia into Maryland. Tornado damage was reported in and around Leesburg “Once in Maryland the tornadoes cycled across a 14 mile path from just southwest of Poolesville to Germantown,” the National Weather Service wrote. The twisters toppled trees and damaged numerous homes. Heavy rain from the storms caused areas of flash flooding, with swift water rescues reported in Fairfax County.
