DC weather history for May 22

Severe storms have repeatedly slammed the region on this day, bringing intense downpours, damaging winds, and flash flooding across multiple years.

On this date in 1975, 2018 and 2022, severe storms rocked the D.C. region, unleashing torrential rain and strong winds.

The 1975 storms — which produced 2.2 inches at what was then called National Airport — brought flash flooding, hail, lightning and power outages, The Washington Post reported at the time. Most of that rain fell in just 35 minutes, according to The Post. And 0.6 inches fell in five minutes, “one of the heaviest bursts in memory,” The Post reported. The storms erupted at the end of a hot day in which the temperature soared to 91 degrees and an air pollution alert was in effect.

The 2018 storms produced 1.12 inches of rain in just an hour at National and caused flooding in the Beltway region.

The 2022 storms cut power to more than 20,000 customers and prompted flood warnings. Strong winds, which gusted up to 59 mph at both National and Washington Dulles International airports, brought down numerous trees. National received 1.5 inches of rain.
