On this date in 1993, a violent thunderstorm tore across the D.C. region, killing four people, toppling trees and cutting power to 78,000 customers.

“A torrent of rain and debris on roadways snarled traffic from Prince William to Prince George’s County,” the front page of The Washington Post reported. “The storm lashed the District and its suburbs for nearly an hour, then ended as abruptly as it had begun, moving toward the Chesapeake Bay about 8 p.m.”
