DC weather history for May 1

A rare taste of winter opened May in Washington, as 1963 brought the coldest May 1 on record. There was even a trace of snow.

On this date in 1963, the high temperature in D.C. was only 51 degrees, marking the coldest first day of May on record. The low was a chilly 41 degrees. Weather records indicate there was even a trace of snow — validated by the front page of The Washington Post the next day. Its headline read, “Month of May Arrives at 33 m.p.h., With Flurries of White Flakes Here.”

The Post reported flurries were seen all over the region and that up to 1.5 inches of snow accumulated in Western Maryland.
