DC weather history for March 23

A soaking 2005 storm delivered record rainfall, with chilly conditions and a coastal low spreading heavy precipitation across the region.

On this date in 2005, a calendar-day record 1.85 inches of rain fell. It was a “good ol’ fashioned soaker,” according to CapitalWeather.com, the independent website that would eventually become part of The Washington Post as the Capital Weather Gang. Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport received a record 2.56 inches.

The rain was produced by a zone of low pressure that passed through Kentucky and then redeveloped off the Delmarva coast. It was a cold rain, with temperatures stuck in the 40s; 5 to 10 inches of snow fell in the interior Northeast.
