DC weather history for July 28

A rare, nor’easter-like summer storm in 2017 brought record rainfall, flooding, and unusually strong winds for late July.

On this date in 2017, a calendar-day record 3.31 inches of rain fell from a storm the Capital Weather Gang likened to a winter nor’easter. The downpours led to the flooding of roads and small streams. The rain continued on July 29, producing widespread storm totals of 3 to 4 inches; a few places saw 6 to 7 inches.

The storm was accompanied by unusually low pressure and strong winds off the ocean. “This storm is a rare bird for late July,” the Weather Gang wrote.
