On this date in 1920, the temperature fell to a calendar-day record low of 55. It was the second of four straight days with lows in the 50s, all records. Highs during the four-day stretch ranged from 73 to 84. That July was the ninth-coolest on record.

And on this date in 1940, the high set a calendar-day record of 100 degrees. Five people died because of the heat, according to the front page of The Washington Post.
