DC weather history for January 6

A surprise snow about a decade ago caught schools off guard and caused widespread disruptions, while in 2025 a more substantial storm dropped over 7 inches, shutting down much of the region.

On this day a decade ago, 2 to 4 inches of snow fell across the D.C. area when only a coating to 2 inches was predicted. School systems were caught off-guard and opened on time, only to regret it later. “Students were left waiting for buses that never came,” The Washington Post reported. “Schools reported that buses were stuck in traffic or unable to navigate icy hills. The decision to open infuriated parents, who accused school officials of being reckless and putting students in unnecessary danger.”

And on this day in 2025, 7.2 inches of snow fell in D.C. “The most significant snowstorm since 2019 swept through the D.C. area Monday, closing schools and federal offices while transforming the region into a winter wonderland,” the Capital Weather Gang wrote. Schools and federal offices closed and airlines canceled hundreds of flights.
