DC weather history for January 5

A deep freeze in 1877 drove temperatures below zero for several mornings, while a 1980 storm followed up with nearly 5 inches of snow atop an already wintry stretch.

On this day in 1877, the low temperature plunged to a record of minus-3 degrees. It was the third morning in a row with temperatures this cold.

And on this day in 1980, a calendar-day record 4.8 inches of snow fell, after 2.1 inches the previous day. “Snow fell continuously in most of the Washington area for a second day yesterday, piling 5 to 10 inches high and leaving many roads dangerously slushy or icy,” The Washington Post reported on Jan. 6.
