DC weather history for April 21

Heavy spring rains in 1992 triggered significant flooding west of the region, with widespread downpours and severe weather along a cold front.

On this date in 1992, record spring rains fell west of Washington along a cold front, resulting in severe flooding toward the mountains. Five to 8 inches of rain fell from Roanoke to Hagerstown, Maryland.

“Thunderstorms were initiated along the front as it swept by,” the National Weather Service wrote. “Virginia received heavy downpours associated with these storms that led to flooding across the state. Some places in West Virginia and Maryland experienced damaging winds and hail as big as 1 inch in diameter.”

About an inch of rain fell in D.C.
