Extreme heat in 1881 sent temperatures to a record 104 degrees, while in 1934 a soaking storm brought record rainfall and widespread flooding across the city.

On this date in 1881, the temperature soared to a September record of 104 degrees. That September was unusually warm. It reached at least 90 on 12 days and its average temperature of 78.2 was the highest on record.

And on this date in 1934, a calendar-day record 3.78 inches of rain fell. “Rain which fell steadily all day flooded sewers and streets and tied up traffic throughout Washington yesterday,” The Washington Post wrote on its front page the next day.
