DC weather history for September 25

Remnants of Hurricane Eloise in 1975 brought a deluge that set a rainfall record, flooded homes and roads, and forced evacuations across the region.

On this day in 1975, a calendar-day record 3.46 inches of rain as the remnants of Hurricane Eloise began passing through the area. The next day, another 2.12 inches would fall, pushing totals over 5 inches.

“The persistent rainstorm caused here by Hurricane Eloise swelled Washington area streams and rivers early yesterday, flooded homes and highways, stranded morning rush hour motorists and forced the evacuation of thousands as it moved northward through Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York into New England,” The Washington Post reported on its front page on Sept. 27. “In a somewhat milder replay of 1972’s devastating tropical storm Agnes, the floodwaters damaged scores of businesses and residences.”
