An early-season Arctic blast in 1969 drove temperatures down to a record 29 degrees, with even colder readings in surrounding areas.

On this day in 1969, the temperature dipped to a calendar-day record low of 29 because of an unseasonably cold Arctic air mass. Temperatures plunged to 20 degrees in Frederick, Maryland, an October record.
