Record-shattering heat in 2019 pushed temperatures to an incredible 98 degrees—the hottest ever observed in October and a remarkable extension of summer-like conditions.

On this day in 2019, the temperature soared to 98 degrees, the highest ever observed in October. “There are many years in which Washington never hits 98 degrees even in July and August much less October,” I wrote at the time. It marked the 62nd day at or above 90 degrees in 2019, ranking as the third-most on record in a calendar year and followed the third-hottest September on record.
