DC weather history for October 17

A soaking 1932 storm dropped record rainfall, flooding roads and fields and contributing to one of the wetter Octobers on record.

On this day in 1932, a calendar-day record 2.52 inches of rain fell. Factoring in rain the day before and after, the storm total neared 3 inches. Northern Virginia was particularly hard hit. “Impassable roads, flooded fields and crippled communication facilities continued to mount in the toll of havoc wrought,” the front page of The Washington Post reported.

The total October rainfall that month reached 7.4 inches in D.C., the seventh highest amount on record.
