On this day in 1952, a calendar-day record 2.52 inches of rain fell. This followed a record 1.83 inches the previous day. Add on the 0.15 inches on Nov. 19 and 0.11 inches on Nov. 22 and the four-day total reached 4.61 inches.
“A steady drenching rain lashed by tree-felling gusts of more than 60 miles an hour flooded many areas in Greater Washington yesterday,” the front page of The Washington Post reported on Nov. 22. The Post wrote that the Potomac River overflowed, flooding Hains Point and parts of Alexandria.
“The wind shattered several large plate glass windows in Washington and brought trees and wires crashing to the ground throughout the area,” The Post said. “Stalled cars slowed rush hour traffic to a crawl.”
