A multi-day deluge in 2008 brought record rain and severe storms, part of a stretch that dumped more than 7 inches in just five days.

On this date in 2008, a calendar-day record 2.22 inches of rain fell in the Washington area. It occurred the day after 1.32 inches of rain fell as severe thunderstorms swept through the area, spawning a tornado in Stafford County, Virginia, while also producing 100 mph winds and damage near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Then, a record 2.63 inches of rain fell on May 11 and another 1.32 inches on May 12. The five-day total from May 8 to 12 was 7.71 inches, and amounts around the region ranged from 3 to 8 inches. That May ended up with 10.66 inches of rain in D.C., the third-most on record.
