On this date in 1992, a potent cold front spurred a sudden drop in temperatures. The early afternoon high reached 86 degrees, but it was in the 60s by late afternoon and 50s by sunset. The low of 50 degrees occurred at midnight. Philadelphia witnessed a 42-degree temperature drop, while the mercury tumbled from 82 to 45 degrees in New York City.

The next day, the high in D.C. was only 58.
