DC weather history for May 19

Sharp swings define May 19, from a late-season chill with near-record cold in 1976 to bursts of early summer heat in other years.

On this date in 1976, the temperature fell to a calendar-day record low of 43 degrees and the high was only 61. Snow even fell in Western Maryland from the unusually late Arctic blast. But the chill was short-lived. The next day, the high was 86.

And on this date in 1962, the temperature soared to 95 degrees, between highs of 94 the previous day and 92 the next day. Baltimore set record highs of 97, 98 and 95 during the same stretch.

And on this date in 2026, D.C. soared to 97 degrees, it highest temperature on record so early in the calendar year. Washington Dulles International hit 96, the second of three straight record record highs.
